By Reuters Tennis legend Roger Federer and former US Open champion Andy Murray were named the winners of the men’s singles event in Washington.
The men’s doubles was won by former world No.1 Andy Murray, a US Open qualifier.
Federer, a former champion, is the first to win back-to-back US Open titles since he won in 2001 and 2002.
Murray, who won the US title in 2008, finished runner-up in last year’s Wimbledon final.
Murray has won a record 10 Grand Slam singles titles, including four majors, since winning the US in 2012.US Open spokesman David Fidler said Murray had been selected to represent the United States on the women’s side of the event.
“Andy is a true champion who has represented the US well over the last few years,” Fidle said in a statement.
“The best players of their generation are coming to play in front of our fans.
He will be a great addition to our men’s and women’s teams.”
The men are in Washington on Sunday, a day after the US Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision that struck down a state law barring gay marriage.
Murray’s win is a remarkable achievement for the 29-year-old who won his first US Open title at the age of 20 in 2002.
“I’m very happy for Andy,” Federer said.
“I’m extremely proud to represent my country.”
Murray said he is ready for the US to get back on track and to fight for its future.
“We are very excited to be playing the US again,” he said.
“This is the biggest moment of my career.
This is the pinnacle of my tennis career and I just want to take this opportunity to go out there and compete.”
Murray and Federer have been rivals since the pair won the 2001 US Open in New York.
The two players also met for the first time at the 2015 US Open.
Murray and the US men’s team won the final of the Davis Cup, a tournament in which the top two seeds of each event play each other for the chance to advance to the US final.
The top two finishers in each tournament earn a place at the next round of the US Masters championship, a $2.7 billion tournament that is the marquee event in tennis in the US.
The Davis Cup is a two-day tournament that takes place at Madison Square Garden in New Jersey and features the top four seeds from each event.
